Popularly characterised by pain, tingling, numbness, and other symptomatic discomfort of the hand, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a progressive condition caused by excessive compression of the median nerve in your wrist.
The most common causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, pregnancy, obesity, repetitive hand movements, wrist injuries, bone spurs, and even smoking.
The median nerve, which runs from your forearm to the palm of your hand, controls the sensation, impulse, and movement of your fingers.
The median nerve is housed inside a narrow passageway composed of ligaments and bones. This narrow passageway is referred to as the carpal tunnel. And this is where the problem lies.
Being a progressive disorder, the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome arise gradually. Symptoms of early stage carpal tunnel syndrome include burning, tingling, and numbness in the palm of the hand. Swelling is also a common complaint of people with CTS. These symptoms usually appear during the night on one or both hands. Carpal tunnel sufferers usually wake up with the need to shake out the hands and wrist.Continue Reading →
